Beverly Shaffer Piano Studio 825 Whitehall Pkwy, Montgomery AL 36109, Phone 272-4115
GOALS The goals of this studio are to enrich the lives of students by providing them with a thorough knowledge of music, to provide a solid foundation for those who wish to pursue a career in music, and to help each student gain a lifetime enjoyment of music.
TRAINING Beverly Shaffer received the Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in piano performance from Peabody College of Vanderbilt University. She has been teaching since 1971 and has on the faculties of Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, Ohio, Georgia Academy of Music in Atlanta, Georgia, AUM and Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama.
PRIVATE LESSONS Students are accepted for study after an interview with student and parent. Every beginning student is expected to practice a minimum of 30 minutes a day five days each week. The practice minimum will increase with the length of study. Lessons are one hour in length. Music theory and ear training are an integral part of every student’s study.
GROUP CLASSES A regular group performing experience is beneficial to any piano student and essential for an aspiring pianist. Approximately every six weeks each student will have a small group class instead of his or her regular lesson.
RECITALS AND FESTIVALS Each student is encouraged – but not required – to participate in local festivals such as Boykin, AMTA District, and AMTA State. Advanced students are encouraged to participate in the MTNA festival as well.
MISSED LESSONS Lessons missed by the teacher will be rescheduled. From September through May, lessons missed by the student will not be rescheduled since regularly scheduled students take up all available time. If a student is unable to come at his or her regularly scheduled time, that student may try to change places with another student. During June and July, lessons missed by the student will be rescheduled if notification is made one day in advance.
COMPUTER LAB The computer lab includes computer software and hardware for students from kindergarten through college level. Each student works in the computer lab for 30 minutes before or after his/her lesson. This time is in addition to the hour private lesson and is a great benefit to students as they are able to drill at their own pace in the extremely important areas of theory and ear training.
Note: The lab fee of $200 per student per year is due in August. There are no lessons in August, so there is no $200 lesson fee in August – just the lab fee.
